The Living Desert’s newest addition, the William Fries II Foundation Monarch of the Desert Jaguar Exhibit, officially opens on April 1, 2011. Located at the Foothills of Sonora Garden, behind the Sonoran aviary, it will be approached along a trail that leads from the main path to the jaguar enclosure. As guests walk along this path they will come upon jaguar tracks as well as the tracks of its prey (including the peccary). Further on they encounter territorial scratch marks and an abandoned silver mine. Adjacent to the exhibit there are interesting signage and graphics that detail the natural history of the jaguar, fun facts and conservation efforts. Across from the exhibit is a motion-sensitive camera trap whose strobe and shutter are set off by the passing of guests.
The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a big cat, a feline in the Panthera genus – the only Panthera species found in the Americas. It is the world’s third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. It is the only New World cat that roars.
